Although it takes up to 3 years to actually get going (unless you purchase asparagus crowns), this perennial plant will produce a bountiful harvest year after year for up to 30 years.In addition, the plant itself is kind of attractive with an extended feather-like top that turns a warm golden hue within the fall and makes a strong statement in your garden.
Native to Western Europe, asparagus does best in areas where the bottom freezes in winter or there are dry seasons.
In wet and warm areas like Florida and therefore the seashore, it's difficult to grow this plant because it's just too moist.
